Jehan
was born in Paris, France on the 30th September 1840 and it was no surprise
that he became an artist. His paternal grandfather was Jean Pierre Vibert
the famous botanist who is also covered elsewhere on this site. His maternal
grandfather was the celebrated French engraver Jazet.
He
studied engraving with Jazet, but soon realized he wanted to be a painter
and entered the studio of F.J.Barrias. At the age of 16 he entered the
Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and by his own accounts topped the class for six
years in a row !
In
1870 during the siege of Paris he joined the " sharpshooters"
and was wounded at Malmaison on October the 21st, receiving the medal
of the Legion of Honour. This injury did not seem too bad however as he
continued to paint profusely until 1899.
He
died in 1902, of what I do not know. But one thing is for sure. I wish
I had his talent instead of his waistline! The following picture is the
only one I know of him.
