Painted
in the late 1870's this painting is an oil on canvas and measures
20 3/8" x 25 1/8" and hangs in the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
Vibert depicts two gentlemen in eighteenth century costume engaged
in their pursuit of butterfly collecting. The man with the net and
hat full of butterflies, may be the servant, and the gentleman with
the book to identify the species, the master.
Vibert had also done another painting of a similar subject with
the same name showing two men, one with a magnifying glass the other
with a book, admiring an insect.
