J G Vibert Paintings

Figaro and a Priest

This is a watercolour 10 1/4"x 7 1/4" held in a private collection in London.

Vibert had painted a series of works devoted to the figure he called " the gayest, trickiest, most active of all barbers", Figaro.

This painting depicts the colourfully dressed Figaro, carrying a sheaf of   documents just having left a rendezvous with the archbishop at the latter's residence, where he has been spreading gossip and passing on information.

On his way out, he encounters the priest who begrudgingly pays his respects to the barber by removing his large hat.
